5 Things to Look for When Touring a Home
When it's time to take a tour of that home you are considering, you may be wondering about the things you need to be looking for. Check out these five things you want to be sure to take a look at as you visit a home.
Storage
How much storage is there in the home? Take a good look at the closet spaces, utility room, kitchen cabinets, and basement. Will there be enough storage space in the home for you and your family?
Privacy
Visit all of the home's bedrooms and look out the windows. What does the view look like? Do you see the wall of a neighbor's property, a fenced in backyard, or perhaps a neighbor staring at you from their bedroom window?
The Home's Exterior
Be sure to walk around the outside of the home. How does the exterior look? Inspect the siding and roof, the foundation, and other aspects of the home. Does the siding need to be replaced or repainted? Do you see cracks in the foundation? Take a look at the windows and doors, and the overall landscape.
Smells and Stains
Do you smell anything funny in the house? Don't forget to check out the basement. Damp, musty smells can indicate leakage in the basement that you may not want to deal with. A strange smell in the rest of the house could indicate mold growth somewhere. Take a good look at the ceilings and baseboards. Do you see any water stains or mold? Stains could mean a past water leak or a flooding problem.
Lighting
How's the lighting in the house? Is there a great deal of natural light or is the home overly dark? Is there adequate lighting for your family's needs or do you foresee needing to add lights? Raise blinds in the home to get a good idea about the natural light in the house.
Touring a home should give you more than just an overall impression of the house. Take a deeper look so you can decide if the home is worth pursuing or walking away from.
