Going to an Open House? Here's What You Should Look For
The decision to buy a home is a tough
one. Actually choosing that home is even tougher. You're going to see
tons of houses that you're absolutely in love with on paper (or on
the computer), only to feel disappointed or overwhelmed when you see
them in person. Then, out of nowhere, it hits you – the perfect
home. Don't be blinded, though. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled
for flaws as you move through the decision making process.
Understanding the Neighborhood
Do a little bit of
research about the neighborhood the home is in as well as the
surrounding neighborhoods – especially if the area is new to you.
Are you close enough to grocery stores and doctors? Do you have a
family (or are you planning one)? If so, you'll need to know about
the school district. Does the area experience high crime rates? Is it
really as quiet as it was when you visited at 10am? How long will it
take you to get from the neighborhood to your place of employment?
Tour the Exterior
We often look at
the front and inside of a house but forget to look at the entire
exterior. Take a walk around the entire house, keeping your eyes
peeled for roofing issues, siding problems, and other signs of
neglected home maintenance. While you may not uncover anything major,
you may also find some things to ask a home inspector about.
What are Your Deal Breakers?
Know your deal
breakers and look at them first. Things like a large kitchen, natural
lighting, and even closet space are really important to some people.
What's important to you? Know what you're looking for and make sure
potential homes accommodate those needs. If not, move on before you
become conflicted about loving a house that isn't all you'd hoped
for.
Don't settle for
anything less than what you really want in a home. There are plenty
out there to choose from. And when you are ready? Contact
